John Percival on Nureyev
Article Abstract:
Reminiscences about Rudolf Nureyev advance the view that no current dancer had apprenticed himself so much to Petipa. Nureyev spent his whole career serving Petipa and can be called the perfectionist of classical ballet. The differences between Russian and British style are also discussed, British footwork being intricate and the Russians having bigger and more generous movements. Nureyev also started restoring works from the old French classical tradition but also performed works by choreographers such as Balanchine, Robbins and Paul Taylor.

Article Abstract:
Chicago Opera Theater (CTO) has transformed Charles X into Abraham Lincoln (Il Viaggio a Reims), a Monteverdi L'Incoronazione di Poppea featuring five lead 'castrati' roles and relocated to Fabulous Las Vegas, to Handels' Semele, Britten's Death in Venice and Glass's Akhnaten. Similar popular shows like these distinguish the CTO's steady output of rare, hard to perform, and reconstructed works.
