'Frankie and Johnny' in Chicago and some problems of attribution
Article Abstract:
'Frankie and Johnny' was the one important ballet created in Chicago. Premiered in 1938, the work emerged from the Federal Theatre Project of the Works Progress Administration, from local artistic politics and from the Depression. The ballet was based on a ballad about Johnnie's shooting of Frankie for betraying her and the ballet transforms this situation into a parody through the use of vernacular dance. The ballet was a collaboration which apparently had complications. Ruth Page and Bentley Stone did the choreography, Jerome Moross the music, Paul du Pont the set and costumes.
