William S. Burroughs at the Los Angeles County Museum of Art: pariah or pope?
Article Abstract:
An exhibition of the varied works of William Burroughs at the Los Angeles County Museum of Art called "Ports of Entry" overwhelms the visitor without providing depth in its understanding of the writer, painter and cultural icon. Curator of photography Robert Sobieszek's description of Burroughs is overly grandiose and the works are not organized well. The museum appears to be taking advantage of his popularity with extensive merchandising, but the tension between the merchandise and Burroughs' resistance to commodification goes unquestioned.

His ability to adapt to new technologies has helped him make use of the changes that have occurred in his 95 years. Alvarez Bravo was less interested in politics than were other Mexican artists, particularly in the 1930s. His focus on vision and seeing is evident in his photographs of street scenes and figures in Mexico.

The lost myth of Gasterea
Article Abstract:
The lost Muse of eating, Gasterea, would be distressed by the degree to which the joys of eating have been compromised by prepackaged foods and health-conscious diets. Gasterea was rediscovered by Anthelme Brillat-Savarin in "The Physiology of Taste." Gasterea has endured the changing attitudes toward food that have occurred through history because of religious and political changes. Lo-cal processed food products are not the foods that Gasterea intended to share with the world.
