Ruf 993BTR: what to buy when the 911 Turbo just won't do

The Ruf 993BTR has less understeer and feels more secure than the Porsche 911 Turbo. The car is more powerful than the Turbo, and the brief boost lag does not detract from the ride. The base price is $106,065. The Ruf RCT, with a base price of $86,908, has even faster acceleration than the BTR.

An $80,000 Porsche Carrera 4 performed impressively during a 30,000 mile test drive. The sports car's rigid body created excessive noise, and it required extensive maintenance at 15,000 miles. With snow tires, the four-wheel drive system and anti-lock brakes offered good driving performance.

A Saab 900SE convertible was evaluated for performance at different junctures, ending at 40,000 miles. After initially posting outstanding results, the Saab exhibited a variety of nagging problems when driven with the top in place. Price for the model tested was $39,445.
