A perspective on the economy
Article Abstract:
The economic conditions of the last five years have been high in growth but the next five years will not be as bright. The most powerful engine of growth in the last five years has been the rapid expansion of Federal spending from $135 billion in 1966 to about $1 trillion in 1987. This spending has created a budget deficit which will keep interest rates abnormally high and discourage capital investment. There are no other large engines of growth, so the government will have to reduce the national debt by cutting spending and increasing taxes. People lost confidence in the banking system because of widespread abuses, unnecessary risks, and mismanagement of the 1970s and 1980s. The banking industry has a responsibility to manage funds in an conscientious, future-oriented style that will inspire confidence from the general public.

Insurance for the Y2K dilemma
Article Abstract:
Risk management is needed for organizations who must protect themselves from potential business losses and lawsuits relating to year 2000 computer date transition (Y2K) problems. Many insurance firms have asked state regulators to exclude claims on losses resulting from Y2K problems as they argue that organizations have been given plenty of warning and more than enough time to address the Y2K issue. Companies wishing to protect themselves from problems relating to Y2K issues ought to become Y2K compliant and find out which insurers are willing to furnish some Y2K related coverage.
