A polyphasic approach to study the diversity and vertical distribution of sulfur-oxidizing Thiomicrospira species in coastal sediments of the German Wadden Sea
Article Abstract:
A study was conducted to examine the diversity and distribution of Thiomicrospira strains from coastal sediments of the German Wadden Sea using a polyphasic approach. The abundance of 16S rRNA in various sediment layers were determined using rRNA slot blot hybridization. Results indicated that Thiomicrospira strains are opportunistic microorganisms that grow under culture environments. Findings also showed that the species were metabolically active members of the bacterial community in the first 4 mm of the sediment.

Increased species diversity and extended habitat range of sulfur-oxidizing Thiomicrospira spp
Article Abstract:
Novel molecular methods and conventional cultivation techniques were employed in analyzing the habitat range and diversity of the bacteria Thimicrospira. Enrichment cultures for chemolithoautotrophic sulfur-oxidizing bacteria were used to isolate bacteria in pure culture and 722-bp-long 16s rDNA fragments were amplified from saltwater and freshwater habitats. Various new species belonging to the Thiomicrospira of Proteobacteria gamma subdivision were observed in the 16S rRNA sequences of the isolates.

Bacteriophage diversity in the North Sea
Article Abstract:
Eighty-five phages were collected from an area near, Helgoland, a German island in the North Sea, to examine 22 phage-host systems in aquatic environments and genetic relationships of the phages. Electron microscopy, DNA-DNA hybridization and host range studies were used to determine the relationships between phages. Results show that there is no DNA homology between phages and that the 22 bacteriophages came from 13 different species.
