A new Shiga toxin 2 variant (Stx2f) from Escherichia coli isolated from pigeons

Researchers describe a new variant gene in Shiga toxin-producing E. coli (STEC) strains isolated from feral pigeons. Twelve percent of the STEC organisms in pigeon droppings had this gene.

Anaerobic conditions promote expression of Sfp fimbriae and adherence of sorbitol-fermenting enterohemorrhagic Escherichia coli O157:NM to human intestinal epithelial cells
Article Abstract:
The studies have explored the possibility that the expression of Sfp fimbriae has depended on conditions that mimic the natural milieu in the host and the intestinal environment. The studies have shown that the expression of Sfp fimbriae in sorbitol-fermenting (SF) Escherichia coli O157:NM strains is induced under conditions resembling those of the natural site of infection and that Sfp fimbriae has contributed to the adherence of the organisms to human intestinal epithelium.

Transduction of enteric Escherichia coli isolates with a derivative of Shiga toxin 2-encoding bacteriophage phi-3538 isolated from Escherichia coli O157:H7
Article Abstract:
Research was conducted to examine the ability of a detoxified derivative of a Shiga toxin 2 (Stx2)-encoding bacteriophage to infect and lysogenize enteric Escherichia coli strains and to develop infectious progeny from such lysogenized strains. Using the model of a detoxified derivative of an Stx2-converting bacteriophage, it was illustrated that Stx2-converting bacteriophages were able to spread among enteric E coli strains and may therefore contribute to the genotypic and phenotypic heterogeneity seen in the Stx-producing E coli family.
