Anaerobic metabolism in Bacillus licheniformis NCIB 6346
Article Abstract:
Bacillus licheniformis is unable to synthesize the glucose derivatives sorbitol, gluconate and glucoronate under anaerobic conditions. This inability was sustained even in the presence of nitrate and only resulted in the production of acetate. Acetate was also the main product formed when the bacterium was induced to ferment in the presence of these glucose derivatives. This points to the importance of the formate-nitrate oxido-reductase system in anaerobic conditions.

Phytase activity of anaerobic ruminal bacteria
Article Abstract:
A study was conducted to analyze phytase activity in strains of obligately anaerobic ruminal bacteria. Ruminal samples were determined from cannulated Hereford steers. Bacterial cultures were harvested by centrifugation while the quantitative phytase assay was prepared with a sodium acetate buffer incubated at 39 degrees C. Results indicated that ruminal bacteria are a possible source of highly active phytase that could be commercially developed.

The effect of heavy metals and other environmental conditions on the anaerobic phosphate metabolism of Acinetobacter johnsonii
Article Abstract:
The effect of heavy metals and other environmental conditions on the anaerobic phosphate metabolism of Acinetobacter johnsonii was studied. Experiments using NMR and extractive methods revealed that polyphosphate accumulated aerobically was degraded under anaerobic conditions both in the absence and presence of uranium or cadmium. Results indicate that the presence of nitrate at 10mM concentrations and above inhibited anoxic phosphate release.
