Androgenesis from Festuca pratensis x Lolium multiflorum amphidiploid cultivars in order to select and stabilize rare gene combinations for grass breeding
Article Abstract:
Use of an alternative strategy to incorporate advantages of androgenesis from Festuca pratensis x Lolium hubrids is reported. The approach can give rare or unique genotypes suitable for plant breeding. The androgenesis using the amphidiploid cultivars gave rise to widespread plant sterility in androgenic Festuflorum populations.

GISH/FISH mapping of genes for freezing tolerance transferred from Festuca pratensis to Lolium multiflorum
Article Abstract:
The first backcross breeding program for the transfer of freezing-tolerance genes from winter hardy Festuca pratensis to winter-sensitive Lolium multiforum is described. It is analyzed that combined use of genomic in situ hybridisation (GISH) and fluorescence in situ hybridisation (FISH) with rDNA probes revealed the chromosome location of Festuca genes for freezing tolerance on chromosome 2 and 4 and subsequent to their transfer from Festuca led to enhanced freezing tolerance of Lolium.

Interspecific genomic rearrangements in androgenic plants derived from a Lolium multiflorum x Festuca arundinacea (2n = 5x = 35) hybrid
Article Abstract:
Interspecific genomic rearrangements in androgenic plants coming from a Lolium multiflorum x Festuca arundinacea (2n = 5x = 35) hybrid, temperate grasses, are discussed. Androgenesis of a very amenable pentaploid hybrid genotype gave a population of aneupolyhaploid plants made it possible to show much the potential genotypic and phenotypic variation that can be brought on through meiosis. Recombinants were seen between chromosomes of three genomes in the hybrid showing its efficacy for starting introgression breeding programs.
