Antagonistic activity exerted in vitro and in vivo by Lactobacillus casei (strain GG) against Salmonella typhimurium C5 infection
Article Abstract:
The antagonistic activity of Lactobacillus casei GG against Salmonella typhimurium C5 infection impends the attack by Salmonella in vitro. L. casei releases an antimicrobial substance into the supernatant, that is active between pH three to five. L. casei fails to inhibit Salmonella after neutralization of the medium. In vivo experiments show that the C5 strain survives and persists at high levels in mice lacking L. casei. In L. casei GG germ-free mice, L. casei establishes itself in the gut and delays the mortality of the animal.

pH-, Lactic acid-, and non-lactic acid dependent activities of probiotic lactobacilli against Salmonella enterica serovar typhimurium
Article Abstract:
The mechanism underlying the antibacterial activity of probiotic Lactobacillus strains appear to be malfactorial and include lowering of the pH and the production of lactic acid and of antibacterial compounds. The production of the non-lactic substance responsible for the killing activity was dependent on growth temperature and that both unstable and stable substances killing activity were present in the cell-free culture supernatants was shown.

A study was conducted to investigate the mechanism by which Lactobacillus acidophilus strain of human microbiota origin antagonizes the gram-negativeentroinvasive pathogen Salmonella enterica serovar typhimurium. The cell-free culture supernatant of Lactobacillus acidophilus strain LB (LB-CFCS) induced number of effects in Salmonella enterica SL1344, which included a decrease in intracellular ATP that parallel bacteria death.
