Characterization of metabolism in the Fe(III)-reducing organism Geobacter sulfurreducens by constraint-based modeling
Article Abstract:
The constraint based approach to modeling for Geobacter sulfurreducens is the first genome-scale model available for an organism that is capable of complete anaerobic oxidation of organic compounds. Evaluation of the rates of proton production and consumption in the extracellular and cytoplasmic compartments revealed that energy conservation with extracellular electron acceptors such as Fe(III) was limited relative to that associated with intracellular acceptors.

Outer membrane c-type cytochromes required for Fe(III) and Mn(IV) oxide reduction in Geobacter sulfurreducens
Article Abstract:
Two c-type cytochromes are identified that are loosely associated with the cell surface of Geobacter sulfurreducens growing on the insoluble electron acceptor Mn(IV) oxide. The genetic studies have shown that these cytochromes are involved in the reduction of Fe(III) and Mn(IV) oxides but are not required for the reduction of soluble Fe(III).

Geobacter sulfurreducens can grow with oxygen as a terminal electron acceptor
Article Abstract:
Geobacter sulfurreducens, earlier classified as anaerobic, have successfully tolerated the exposure to atmospheric oxygen for a period of twenty-four hours and grew with oxygen as the sole electron acceptor. Thus, Geobacter sulferreducens are aerotolerant and should not be considered as a strict anaerobe.
