Improvement and optimization of two engineered phage resistance mechanisms in Lactococcus lactis
Article Abstract:
Two antisense plasmids that can inhibit bacteriophage DNA replication in Lactococcus lactis are described. They target replication module genes, which were isolated from four P355 type phages.

Comparative genomics and transcriptional analysis of prophages identified in the genomes of Lactobacillus gasseri, Lactobacillus salivarius, and Lactobacillus casei
Article Abstract:
Lactobacillus gasseri ATCC 33323, Lactobacillus salivarius subsp. salivarius UCC 118 and Lactobacillus casei ATCC 334 contain one (LgaI), four (Sal1, Sal2, Sal3, Sal4) and one (Lca1) distinguishable prophage sequences, respectively. Several studies have revealed that these prophage sequences are narrowly distributed with lactobacilli.

Molecular characterization of a phage-encoded resistance system in Lactococcus lactis
Article Abstract:
A putative replisome organizer protein from the temperate lactococcal phage Tuc2009, designated as Rep(sub 2009), has been identified. A Tuc2009-resistant phenotype on its lactococcal host, UC509.9, has been found to be conferred by a region rich in direct repeats which is contained with the rep(sub 2009) gene, designated ori(sub 2009). DNA mutagenesis and protein-DNA interactions between Rep(sub 2009) and ori(sub 2009) have been employed to investigate the possible role of ori(sub 2009) in Tuc2009 replication, finding that the series of direct repeats contained within the rep(sub 2009) gene sequence ori(sub 2009) may represent a possible ori for Tuc2009 and that the interaction of Rep(sub 2009) with ori(sub 2009) initiates DNA replication in Tuc2009.
