Construction of an expression system for site-directed mutagenesis of the lantibiotic mersacidin
Article Abstract:
The structural gene of mersacidin and the enzyme biosynthesis pathway genes are in a gene cluster, which serves as the platform for the construction of the expression system for site-directed mutagenesis of lantibiotics. The expression of engineered mersacidin peptides is monitored by the replacement of wild-type genes by the engineered genes. Data indicate that the didehydroalanine residue plays a role in the biosynthesis and biological activity of mersacidins.

A modified Saccharomyces cerevisiae strain that consumes L-arabinose and produces ethanol
Article Abstract:
Research describes metabolic engineering of a Saccharomyces cerevisiae strain that can grow on L-arabinose and ferment it to ethanol. The engineered yeasts contain an overexpressing bacterial L-arabinose utilization pathway, which comprises of Bacillus subtilis AraA and Escherichia coli AraB and AraD with concomittant overexpression of L-arabinose-transporting yeast galactose permease.

Marker rescue studies of the transfer of recombinant DNA to Streptococcus gordonii in vitro, in foods and Gnotobiotic rats
Article Abstract:
Results indicate that the efficiency of marker rescue, used to monitor the transfer of bacterial and transgenic plant DNA by transformation, in plants, food and rats is dependent on the donor DNA type. Data suggest that absence of competence-stimulaing factors leads to lack of marker rescue in transformation studies.
