Control of Neisseria gonorrhoeae pilin gene expression by environmental factors: involvement of the pilA/pilB regulatory genes
Article Abstract:
The effects of different growth conditions on the expression of the Neisseria gonorrhoeae pilin (pilE) gene were analyzed by utilizing gene fusions between pilE and the chloramphenicol acetyltransferase (CAT) gene. Analysis of pilE gene expression patterns via pilE-CAT gene fusions in the presence of high osmolality, high urea concentration and anaerobiosis indicated the role of PilA and PilB in mediating environmental adaptations. The PilA/PilB regulatory proteins also exhibited pleiotropic effects on the level of several gonococcal proteins.

Characterization of the recD gene of Neisseria gonorrhoeae MS11 and the effect of recD inactivation on pilin variation and DNA transformation
Article Abstract:
A study was conducted to analyze the gonococcal recD gene of Neisseria gonorrhoeae and examine its function in pilin variation. The gonococcal recD gene supported a defined Escherichia coli recD mutant based on plaque formation of bacteriophage and the restoration of ATP-dependent nuclease activity. Results indicated that complementation of the MS11 recD mutant with a wild-type recD gene copy promoted the restoration of the frequency of pilin phenotypic variation to about wild-type levels.

Antigenic variation of gonococcal pilin expression in vivo: analysis of the strain FA1090 pilin repertoire and identification of the pilS gene copies recombining with pilE during experimental human infection
Article Abstract:
Cloning, sequencing, and mapping the pilin genes of strain FA1090 of Neisseria gonorrhoeae reveal one pilE locus and 19 silent gene copies arranged in five pilS loci. Human inoculation studies reveal that majority of the colonies of the pilE gene are chimeras.
