DNA probe for Aeromonas salmonicida
Article Abstract:
A DNA probe for the detection of Aeromonas salmonicida, the causal agent of furunculosis, was developed. The DNA fragment was isolated from a genomic library by differential hybridization. The resulting probe was highly specific for A. salmonicida, and the detection procedure was enhanced by polymerase chain reaction technology. The enhanced detection system was able to detect the DNA content of two cells. The development of this probe will facilitate the study of the ecology of A. salmonicida and the etiology of furunculosis.

Effects of nutrients on exopolysaccharide production and surface properties of Aeromonas salmonicida
Article Abstract:
Extracellular polysaccharide (EPS) and capsular polysaccharide (CPS) production by Aeromonas salmonicida A450 and the effect of the capsule on cell surface properties showed that Aeromonas salmonicida did not produce CPS or EPS in the absence of glucose, phosphate, magnesium chloride or trace mineral components. Capsule production increased with the addition of yeast extract. EPS and CPS formations are affected by the level of carbon and nitrogen in the culture.

Development of a diagnostic DNA probe for Xanthomonads causing bacterial spot of peppers and tomatoes
Article Abstract:
Genomic subtraction was found to be effective in the discrimination of Xanthomonads spp. and its strains from each other and from other bacteria. A DNA fragment identified as KK1750 was found to be specific for a pathogenic strain causing bacterial spot of peppers and tomatoes. The results were compared with culture method of detection and there was 80% agreement between the two methods.
