Detection and identification of fungi intimately associated with the brown seaweed Fucus serratus
Article Abstract:
The filamentous fungi associated with healthy and decaying Fucus serratus thalli are analyzed by using isolation methods and molecular techniques like 28S rRNA gene PCR-denaturing gradient gel electrophoresis (DGGE). Phylogenetic analyses of the environmental sequences and the sequences of isolates and type species have shown that the environmental sequences are novel in the Dothideomycetes.

Diversity of sulfur isotope fractionations by sulfate-reducing prokaryotes
Article Abstract:
Researchers have tested sulfur isotope enrichment during sulfate reduction in 32 sulfate-reducing prokaryotes, over the total microbial temperature range, a variety of substrates, and differing salinities and pH values. Under these conditions, isotope fractionation factors ranged from 2% to 42%.

Molecular analysis of the diversity of sulfate-reducing and sulfur-oxidizing prokaryotes in the environment, using aprA as functional marker gene
Article Abstract:
The application and analysis of newly developed sulfate-reducing and sulfur-oxidizing, aprA gene-targeting assay are described. The assay could be used to study the microbial diversity of the sulfur cycle in sediment, seawater, and manganese crust samples from volcanic sites.
