Isolation of microorganisms able to metabolize purified natural rubber
Article Abstract:
Some soil bacteria appear to be capable of using natural rubber as their sole carbon and energy source. Significant degradation of purified vulcanized rubber from latex gloves by ten isolates of bacteria was observed using scanning electron microscopy. In 6 weeks, the isolates could reduce the weight of the rubber by over 10%. Identification of fatty acid and cell wall characteristics revealed all isolates to be in the actinomycetes genera Streptomyces, Amycolatopsis, or Nocardia.

Detection and isolation of novel rhizopine-catabolizing bacteria from the environment
Article Abstract:
A study was conducted to analyze unknown rhizopine-catabolizing bacteria and evaluate the impact of their existence on the use of rhizopine as a selective nutritional mediator. Catabolic activity was determined by serial dilution of soil and rhizosphere washes while bacteria were isolated from the soil to maximize the diversity of isolates. Results indicated a number of factors that significantly influence the effectiveness of nutritional mediators under a rhizosphere environment.

Isolation and characterization of fimbriae from a sparsely fimbriated strain of Porphyromonas gingivalis
Article Abstract:
Fimbriae from Porphyromonas gingivalis W50 was purified to homogeneity by ammonium sulfate precipitation and reverse-phase high-performance liquid chromatography. The fimbriae were identical in diameter to fimbriae of other P. gingivalis strains but were shorter in length. The apparent molecular weight of isolated fimbrillin from strain W50 was observed to be identical to that of the fimbrillin molecule of strain 2561. Purified fimbriae had no hemagglutinating activity.
