Differential siderophore utilization and iron uptake by soil and rhizophore bacteria
Article Abstract:
Comparative studies on the utilization of the pseudobactin siderophes St3, 7SNK2 and WCS358; and the hydroximate siderophores ferrioxamine B and ferrichrome as sources of iron for rhizosphere and soil microflora. The uptake of Fe-pseudobactin siderophores by rhizophere microflora were less because of decreased availability compared to hydroxamate siderophores. Psudobactin-excreting pseudonomad strains such as Pseudomonas putida, Psesudomonas maltophilia and Vibrio fluvialis showed faster uptake rates of pseudobcatin siderophores which resulted in displacement of rhizosphere microorgganisms in their competition for iron source.

Competitive ability and survival in soil of Pseudomonas strain 679-2, a dominant, nonobligate bacterial predator of bacteria
Article Abstract:
Psedumonas species strain 679-2 was isolated and characterized. The competitive behavior and survivality of the isolate in different soil environments were also determined. Results showed that the strain attacked other predatory bacteria and inhibited the activities of different fungal species. Strain 679-2 exhibited rapid growth rate in soil and sourced its nutrients from prey bacterial cell and fungal cells. It also showed high survival rate even with dessication of the soil.

Influence of effluent irrigation on community composition and function of ammonia-oxidizing bacteria in soil
Article Abstract:
The composition of ammonia-oxidizing bacteria in agricultural soil changes depending on the type of irrigation used. Nitrosospira-like populations become dominant when fertilizer-amended water is used and Nitrosomonas-like populations become dominant when wastewater effluent is used.
