Direct 5S rRNA assay for monitoring mixed-culture bioprocesses
Article Abstract:
A direct 5S rRNA assay technique is useful in separating rRNA of bacteria in acidic environments and in mixed-culture ore bioprocesses. The technique uses high-resolution denaturing gradient gel electrophoresis to separate 5S rRNA isolated from biomass. Separation is based on differences in migration characteristics of 5S rRNA during gradient gel electrophoresis. The method gives a powerful resolution at the species level. The assay is useful in distinguishing between closely related species such as Thiobacillus ferrooxidans ATCC 19859 and Thiobacillus thiooxidans ATCC 8085.

Does green light influence the fluorescence properties and structure of phototrophic biofilms?
Article Abstract:
The effects of illuminating biofilms formed by Gloeothece membranacea (cyanobacteria) and Chlorella sorokiniana (Chlorophyta) using exclusively white or green light is compared and evaluated. Conclusion suggests that green light could prevent the growth of photosynthetic organisms, expect for those capable of modifying accessory pigments.
