Diurnal cycles of sulfate reduction under oxic conditions in cyanobacterial mats
Article Abstract:
Sulfate reduction activity in a cyanobacterial mat under oxic conditions was investigated. Maximal activity of the sulfate-reduction bacteria was measured during the daytime at 2 p.m. Results showed that he addition of different carbon sources such as acetate, lactate, ethanol and glycolate also influenced the sulfate reduction activities in the different layers of the microbial mat. Exposure to high light intensities also inhibited oxygenic photosythesis of cyanobacteria which resulted in higher glycolate excretion and photoreduction of water.

Manganese reduction by microbes from oxic regions of the Lake Vanda (Antarctica) water column
Article Abstract:
Microbially mediated manganese reduction was investigated in Lake Vanda. Microbes concentrated from oxic regions of the water column reduced synthetic manganese oxides when incubated aerobically. Pure cultures of manganese-reducing bacteria were isolated from waters collected near the oxic manganese peak. Most of the isolated manganese reducers belong to the genus Carnobacterium.

Characterization of the nodularin synthetase gene cluster and proposed theory of the evolution of cyanobacterial hepatotoxins
Article Abstract:
An alternative hypothesis for hepatotoxin evolution in cyanobacteria based on the results of comparative and phylogenic analyses of the nda and mcy gene clusters is discussed. An appreciation of the natural evolution of nonribosomal biosynthetic pathways will be vital for future combinatorial engineering and rational design of novel metabolites and pharmaceuticals.
