Microbial thiocyanate utilization under highly alkaline conditions
Article Abstract:
Researchers have identified a cyanate pathway in alkaliphilic thiocyanate-degrading bacteria. Cyanate may act as a buffer that prevents the buildup of free ammonia, which would be toxic to the bacterium.

Diversity, activity, and abundance of sulfate-reducing bacteria in saline and hypersaline soda lakes
Article Abstract:
The diversity, activity and abundance of sulfate-reducing bacteria (SRB) are investigated in the sediment samples from a range of hypersaline soda lakes of the Kulunda Steppe in southeastern Siberia in Russia. The results have shown the presence of diverse and active SRB communities, which are useful in understanding the sulfur cycle in these extreme ecosystems.

Microbial isobutyronitrile utilization under haloalkaline conditions
Article Abstract:
The utilization of microbial isobutyronitrile (iBN) as a source of carbon and nitrogen under various haloalkaline conditions is studied. Results demonstrate s possibility of whole-cell biocatalytic hydrolysis of various nitriles at haloalkaline conditions.
