Effect of metal cations on the viscosity of a pectin-like capsular polysaccharide from the cyanobacterium Microcystis flos-aquae C3-40
Article Abstract:
Metal ions have a biphasic effect on the viscosity of the capsular polysaccharide from the cyanobacterium Microcystis flos-aquae C3-40 at ph 7. Viscosity increases proportionately with metal ion concentration until a maximum value is reached, and then decreases at higher ion concentrations. Mono- and divalent metal cations have different effects. Divalent metal ions cause gelation in concentrated capsule suspensions and precipitation in dilute suspensions, but monovalent ions have no such effect.

Production of capsular polysaccharide of Streptococcus pneumoniae type 14 and its purification by affinity chromatography
Article Abstract:
Researchers used an immobilized soybean lectin as an affinity adsorbent in chromatography to purify the Streptococcus pneumoniae type 14 capsular polysaccharide. This one-step procedure can be used to purify other capsular polysaccharides using the appropriate lectin adsorbent.

Construction of otherwise isogenic serotype 6B, 7F, 14 and 19F capsular variants of Streptococcus pneumoniae strain TIGR4
Article Abstract:
Pneumococcal strains that are isogenic except for capsular type are constructed. The findings state that all constructed capsular variants of TIGR4 are suitable for use in studies on the role of S. pneumoniae capsular polysaccharide in immunity, colonization and pathogenesis.
