Effect of nonylphenol on growth of Neurospora crassa and Candida albicans
Article Abstract:
The effects of the nonionic surfactant nonylphenol on the growth and morphologies of the filamentous fungus Neurospora crassa and the diploid yeast Candida albicans were investigated. Nonylphenol inhibited respiration and growth of N. crassa. Severe morphological defects were also observed. Cell shape was abnormal and apical dominance was lost. Nonylphenol monoethoxylate was a less effective growth inhibitor and morphogen. The growth of the yeast form of C. albicans was affected by nonylphenol but not nonylphenol monoethoxylate.

Enhanced glycerol content in wines made with immobilized Candida stellata cells
Article Abstract:
Immobilized Candida stellata cells used as fermentation starters increase the glycerol content of wines. The immobilized cells produce more ethanol, and less acetaldehyde and acetoin as compared to the free cells. The fermentation of wine with immobilized C. stellata cells and a combination of Saccharomyces cerevisiae and C. stellata after three days is the best combination for a obtaining a high glycerol content.

Metal ions may suppress or enhance cellular differentiation in Candida albicans and Candida tropicalis biofilms
Article Abstract:
The cell type interconversion, drug and metal resistance and community organization in biofilms of Candida albicans and Candida tropicalis that were exposed to metal ions were investigated. Results suggest that Candida biofilm populations may respond to metal ions to from cell-cell and solid surface attached assemblages with distinct patterns of cellular differentiation.
