Evolution of thermotolerance in hot spring cyanobacteria of the genus Synechococcus
Article Abstract:
Phylogenetic analysis show that clones of Synechococcus are polyphyletic and their differences in thermotolerance correlated with the differences in the 16S rRNA gene sequences suggesting that more thermotolerant species evolved from less thermotolerant ancestors.

Ecological physiology of Synechococcus sp. strain SH-94-5, a naturally occurring cyanobacterium deficient in nitrate assimilation
Article Abstract:
Researchers have isolated a strain of Synechococcus that lacks nitrate reductase and nitrite reductase and this is not caused by inactivation of the nitrogen control protein NtcA. Since the bacterium can grow on ammonium, it appears the ability to assimilate nitrate has been unnecessary in some environments.

Effects of visible light and UV radiation on photosynthesis in a population of a hot spring cyanobacterium, a Synechococcus sp., subjected to high-temperature stress
Article Abstract:
A study was conducted to analyze assays of photosynthesis with a hot spring cyanobacterium, a Synechococcus sp. Cells growing near the upper temperature limit of photosynthetic life were examined for their ability to adapt to their mean environmental temperature. Results indicated that the Synechococcus sp was more susceptible to ultraviolet inhibition of photosynthesis at nonoptimal temperature.
