Juan Rivera, head of the Molecular Inflammation Section of the National Institute of Arthritis, Musculoskeletal, and Skin Disease, NIH, credits his parents and chemistry teacher with putting him on a path that led to his tenured position at NIH. Rivera believes that one on his main duties at the NIH is as a mentor, particularly in helping minority scientists forge their careers.
