Sequestration of zinc oxide by fimbrial designer chelators
Article Abstract:
A strain of E. coli that can bind zinc could be used to remove heavy metals from soil or water. The type 1 fimbriae on the bacterial surface bind zinc oxide and the protein appears to be a zinc-containing helicase.

Novel Zn(super 2+)-chelating peptides selected from a fimbria-displayed random peptide library
Article Abstract:
Researchers have identified novel zinc-binding peptide sequences in a random peptide library based on the FimH adhesion on the tip of Escherichia coli type 1 fimbriae. These peptides could be expressed in E. coli and used for heavy metal bioremediation or as a chemical sensor for detecting heavy metals in the environment.

Elucidation of the antibacterial mechanism of the Curvularia Haloperoxidase system by DNA microarray profiling
Article Abstract:
A novel antimicrobial system, the Curvularia haloperoxidase system, is examined with the aim of elucidating its mechanism of antibacterial action. The Escherichia coli K-12 strain MG1655 is exposed to the enzyme system, causing a temporary arrest of growth.
