'Endomicrobia': Cytoplasmic symbionts of termite gut protozoa form a separate phylum of prokaryotes
Article Abstract:
A full-cycle molecular approach is used to show that the endosymbionts of the larger gut flagellates of Reticulitermes santonesis belong to the termite group 1 (TG-1) bacteria. The members of the TG-1 phylum, named as 'Endomicrobia', are phylogenetically extremely diverse and are present in and also restricted to the guts of all lower termites and wood-feeding cockroaches of the genus Cryptocercus, the only insects that are associated with such unique cellulose-fermenting protists.

Phylogenetic diversity of the intestinal bacterial community in the termite Reticulitermes speratus
Article Abstract:
Phylogenetic analysis of 16S rDNA indicates that the intestinal microflora of the termite Reticulitermes speratus contain many new species which were earlier unknown. The microflora contains four major groups of bacteria; Proteobacteria, the spirochete group, the Bacteroides group and gram-positive bacteria. The 16S rDNA clones of Proteobacteria resemble those of cultivated species. The 16S rDNA clones of the other three groups are however different from those of known organisms.

Endosymbiotic Bacteroidales bacteria of the flagellated protist Pseudotrichonympha grassii in the gut of the termite Coptotermes formosanus
Article Abstract:
The endosymbiotic bacteria of the protist genus Pseudotrichonympha (Parabasalia, Hypermastigea), is investigated. The results have shown that the endosymbionts of Pseudotrichonympha protists is affiliated with a unique phylogenetic lineage in the order Bacteriodales and comprised the predominant population in the gut symbiotic community of Coptotermes formosanus.
