Enhanced bioaccumulation of heavy metal ions by bacterial cells due to surface display of short metal binding peptides
Article Abstract:
The role of short metal binding peptides in the enhanced bioaccumulation of heavy metal ions by bacterial cells has been studied. Metal binding peptides of sequences Gly-His-His-Pro-His-Gly (HP) and Gly-Cys-Gly-Cys-Pro-Cys-Gly-Cys-Gly were genetically inserted into the LamB protein and expressed in Escherichia coli. Results indicate that HP did not result in an increase in the bioaccumulation of Cu2+ and Zn2+ in E. coli. The strong binding of Cu2+ to HP prevented the latter from being involved in Cd2+ accumulation.

A novel approach for monitoring genetically engineered microorganisms by using artificial, stable RNAs
Article Abstract:
It may be possible to design, construct, and insert distinct rRNA into genetically engineered microorganisms (GEMs) in order to identify and measure the growth of these organisms. Researchers were able to construct a modified mutation of a Vibrio proteolyticus 5S rRNA gene which, when inserted into Escherichia coli, accumulated to detectable levels without jeopardizing cell survival. This rRNA could be used to identify the E. coli even when it was not incorporated into ribosomes.

Specific secretion of active single-chain Fv antibodies into the supernatants of Escherichia coli cultures by use of the hemolysin system
Article Abstract:
Researchers describe a simple method for producing antibody fragments in E. coli using the E. coli hemolysin transport system. This system can produce the antibody fragment without a periplasmic intermediate stage.
