Environmental influences on Vibrio populations in northern temperate and boreal coastal waters (Baltic and Skagerrak Seas)
Article Abstract:
Vibrio-specific quantitative competitive PCR is combined with denaturant gradient gel electrophoresis-based genotyping to identify environmental factors regulating Vibrio populations in a salinity gradient along the Swedish coastline. Clear differences are observed along the salinity gradient, where three populations dominated the more saline waters of Skagerrak Sea and two populations containing mainly representatives of V. anguillarum and V. aestuarianus genotypes were abundant in the brackish waters of the Baltic Sea.

Abundance and distribution of Osterococcus sp. in the San Pedro channel, California, as revealed by quantitative PCR
Article Abstract:
A study was conducted to design and implement a genus-specific TaqMan-based quantitative PCR assay to investigate the dynamics and ecology of Osterococcus at the USC Microbial Observatory. The results provided a new technique for quantifying the abundance of Osterococcus and demonstrate the seasonal dynamics of the genus and its contribution to picoeukaryote biomass at the coastal sampling stations.

PCR analysis of the distribution of unicellular cyanobacterial diazotrophs in the Arabian Sea
Article Abstract:
An oligonucleotide primer, NITRO821R, targeting the 16S rRNA gene of unicellular cyanobacterial N2 fixers is developed based on new sequences from rocosphaera sp. strain. The utility of rDNA oligonucleotide as a PCR primer is described for assessing the distribution of these organisms along a transect in the Arabian Sea situated in the northwest Indian Ocean.
