Environmentally regulated genes of Streptococcus suis: identification by the use of iron-restricted conditions in vitro and by experimental infection of piglets
Article Abstract:
Environmentally regulated genes of Streptococcus suis have been identified using iron-restricted conditions in vitro and experimental infection of piglets. The study found eighteen unique iron-restriction-induced (iri) genes and 22 unique in-vivo-selected (ivs) genes of Strep. suis. The promoter selection system has been used successfully for identification of many environmentally regulated genes potentially involved in pathogenesis of Strep. suis infections in piglets.

Lipoprotein signal peptidase of Streptococcus suis serotype 2
Article Abstract:
Research describes expression and coding sequence of the lipoprotein signal peptidase, Lsp, from Streptococcus suis. Expression of Lsp in Escherichia coli enhances globomycin resistance. In the absence of Lsp coding gene, S. suis processes lipoproteins incorrectly. Furthermore, both wild-type and the mutant strains of S. suis are equally virulent.

High-efficiency transformation and gene inactivation in Streptococcus suis type 2
Article Abstract:
A new electrotransformation system helps introduce exogenous DNA into Streptococcus suis type 2 with transformation efficiencies of ten to the seventh power transformants per microgram of plasmid DNA. Vectors that are located on the broad-host-range plasmid pWVO1 duplicate in S. suis type 2. S. suis chromosomal DNA-containing plasmid pBR322 vectors integrate into the chromosome. The integration events are single and double cross-overs, as revealed by Southern hybridization, with a frequency of 15% for the double cross-over events.
