Explaining sex differences in dental caries prevalence: Saliva, hormones, and "life-history" etiologies
Article Abstract:
Data for sex differences in dental caries rates among the Guanches (Tenerife, Canary Islands) are presented, results of meta-analyses of dental caries prevalence are summarized and research that stresses the critical role of female hormones, saliva and life-history events in the etiology of dental caries are emphasized. It is concluded that hormonal fluctuations can have a striking effect on the oral health of women, and constitute an important causal factor in explaining sex differences in caries rates.

Polymorphisms in the vitamin D receptor and their associations with risk of schizophrenia and selected anthropometric measures
Article Abstract:
A study was conducted to examine the association between four polymorphisms in the vitamin D receptor (VDR) and risk of schizophrenia and three anthropometric variables (height, head size and bead shape). The results indicated that individuals with schizophrenia were shorter than healthy controls and there was no association between VDR single-nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) and height.
