Exposure of phytopathogenic Xanthomonas spp. to lethal concentrations of multiple oxidants affects bacterial survivial in a complex manner
Article Abstract:
Results show menadione enhancement of the lethal effects of tert-butyl hydroperoxide on Xanthomonas species by 1000-fold and protection by hydrogen peroxide and high levels of catalase. However, a combination of hydrogen peroxide and tert-butyl hydroxide did not confer protection on Xanthomonas suggesting that the former may be lethal.

Catalase has a novel protective role against electrophile killing of Xanthomonas
Article Abstract:
Catalase has been found to have a protective role against electrophile killing of Xanthomonas. Xanthomonas campestris pv phaseoli can protect itself against lethal concentration of man-made and endogenously produced electrophiles. The effects of pre-exposure to low concentrations of electrophiles on the response to subsequent exposure to lethal concentrations of electrophiles were studied. Catalase and hydrogen peroxide were found to have a novel role in electrophile toxicity and might be found in that role in other bacteria. Xanthomonas, unlike other bacteria, is more susceptible to electrophile killing in stationary phase vs exponential phase.

Exposure to cadmium elevates expression of genes in the OxyR and OhrR regulons and induces cross-resistance to peroxide killing treatment in Xanthomonas campestris
Article Abstract:
The effects of cadmium exposure on the oxidative stress responses of Xanthomonas campestris, a soil and plant pathogenic bacterium, is investigated. The exposure of X. campestris to low concentrations of cadmium induces cross-protection against subsequent killing treatments with either H2O2 or the organic hydroperoxide tert-butyl hydroperoxide (tBOOH), but not against the superoxide generator menadione.
