FGF can induce outgrowth of somatic mesoderm both inside and outside of limb-forming regions
Article Abstract:
Microinjection of a replication-defective retrovirus that coexpresses FGF4 with beta-galactosidase into the lateral plate mesoderm in chicken embryos helps study the role of fibroblast growth factor in the temporal and regional activation of mesoderm outgrowth. Limb bud-like outgrowth is observed from cells that express exogenous FGF in the limb-forming and flank regions. Extralimb structures result from the supernumerary limb buds that are activated in limb-forming regions.

Pitx2, a bicoid-type homeobox gene, is involved in a lefty-signalling pathway in determination of left-right asymmetry
Article Abstract:
A common genetic basis of the development of the left-right asymmetry among vertebrates, notably chicks and mice, is investigated by monitoring the influence of the gene products of lefty-1 on Pitx2, a homeobox gene of the bicoid type located downstream of the lefty-1 gene. The expression of Pitx2 is limited on the left lateral plate mesoderm suggesting its role on the development of laterality.
