Genetic analysis of bacteriocin 43 of vancomycin-resistant Enterococcus faecium
Article Abstract:
A total of 636 vancomycin-resistant Enterococcus faecium (VRE) isolates obtained between 1994 and 1999 from the Medical School Hospital of the University of Michigan are investigated for bacteriocin production. The predicted mature BacA protein (44 amino acids) showed sequence homology with the membrane-active class IIa bacteriocins of lactic acid bacteria and revealed 86% homology with bacteriocin 31 from E. faecalis YI717 and 98% homology with bacteriocin RC714.

Combined antimicrobial resistance in Enterococcus faecium isolated from chickens
Article Abstract:
Nineteen Enterococcus faecium strains isolated from chicken caecum samples were coresistant to erythromycin, and/or tetracyclines, and/or streptogramins, and/or avilamycin. The results suggested that these isolates often combined multiple antibiotic resistances, confirming the propensity of this species to acquire antibiotic resistance.

Characterization of a new erm-related macrolide resistance gene present in probiotic strains of Bacillus clausii
Article Abstract:
Results reveal that the Bacillus clausii erm gene amino acid sequence is identical by 61% to that of Erm(D) from B. licheniformis, B. halodurans, and B. anthracis and is localized to chromosome in all B. clausii strains.
