Genetics of rough seed coat texture in cowpea
Article Abstract:
Seed coat texture is important in determining acceptable varieties of cowpea in different areas. The inheritance of seed coat texture was examined to enable appropriate breeding strategies for developing cowpea varieties with preferred seed types for different areas. It is suggested that two paris of independent recessive genes confer rough seed coat texture and the presence of at least one dominant gene leads to a smooth seed coat.

Genetics of resistance to Striga and Alectra in cowpea
Article Abstract:
Pot culture technique enables an analysis of the genes inducing resistance in the B 301, IT82D-849 and SUVITA-2 varieties of cowpea to the parasitic weeds Striga gesnerioides and Alectra vogelli. Three different genes Rsg1, Rsg2 and Rsg3 cause resistance to Striga gesnerioides in B301, IT82D-849 and SUVITA-2 varieties respectively, while Rav1, Rav2 and Rav3 are the resistance genes against Alectra vogelii in B301 and IT81D-994. Rsg3 is not allelic to Rsg1 and Rsg2. The IT81D-994 variety exhibits resistance to both Striga and Alectra.
