Role of Bak in UV-induced apoptosis in skin cancer and abrogation by HPV E6 proteins
Article Abstract:
Bak protein likely has a role in ultraviolet B (UVB)-induced apoptosis in skin cancer but there seems to be abrogation by human papillomavirus (HPV) E6 proteins. A survival mechanism has been seen in cells infected by the virus.

Growth retardation and increased apoptosis in mice with homozygous disruption of the akt1 gene
Article Abstract:
Growth retardation and greater apoptosis in mice having homozygous disruption of the akt1 gene are discussed in this research communication. The most ubiquitously expressed member of the akt family of genes in mice has been disrupted for the study.

twist (ital) is a potential oncogene that inhibits apoptosis
Article Abstract:
A potential oncogene that inhibits apoptosis and is called twist (ital) is discussed. A series of modified, replication-deficient retrovirus vectors (MaRX) and packaging cell lines (LinX) that permit high-efficiency gene transfer to a wide range of cell types has been designed. A functional screen for cDNAs able to counteract the proapoptotic effects of the myc (ital) oncogene found two related bHLH family members, Twist and Dermo1. Both proteins inhibited oncogene- and p53-dependent cell death. Twist may have multiple roles in formation of rhabdomyosarcomas.
