Guanosine 5'-diphosphate 3'-diphosphate (ppGpp), guanosine 5'-diphosphate 3'-monophosphate (ppGp) and antibiotic production in Streptomyces clavuligerus
Article Abstract:
The production of Guanosine 5'-diphosphate 3'-diphosphate (ppGpp) and guanosine 5'-diphosphate 3'-monophosphate (ppGp) during antibiotic production in Streptomyces clavuligerus corresponds to levels of nitrogen available to the cells. S. clavuligerus produces cephamycin C under all nutrient limitations but produces clavulanic acid under phosphate and carbon limitations only. ppGpp is found in less amounts in all fermentations unlike ppGp. No ppGp is produced due to the degradation of ppGpp. Thus, ppGp may be involved in the regulation of cephamycin production in S. clavuligerus.

The Streptomyces reticuli alpha-chitin-binding protein CHB2 and its gene
Article Abstract:
The amino terminal of purified alpha-chitin binding protein, CHB2, was used to design an oligonucleotide probed to screen a subgenomic library of Streptomyces reticuli for the gene encoding CHB2. Results reveal that the gene codes for a protein weighing 18.6 kiloDaltons with significant sequence homology with CHB1 isolated from S. olivaceoviridis. CHB2 mediates the attachment of S. reticuli to chitin-bearing substrates.
