Identification and transcriptional analysis of new members of the sigma(super B) regulon in Bacillus subtilis
Article Abstract:
Nine new members of the sigma(super B) regulon in Bacillus subtilis have been identified and subjected to transcriptional analysis. Putative functions of BmrU, Ycdf, YdaD, YdaP, YhdN and YocK indicate the possible protective role of sigma(super B)-dependent general stress proteins, whose induction makes Bacillus subtilis respond to different stimuli such as ethanol, heat and salt stress. The other new sigma(super B)-dependent genes encoding proteins with still unknown functions are ydaE, ydaG and yfkM.

A Bacillus subtilis secreted phosphodiesterase/alkaline phosphatase is the product of a Pho regulon gene, phoD
Article Abstract:
The protein BC6 was found to be the same protein as a secreted phosphodiesterase/alkaline phosphatase (APaseD), a member of the alkaline phosphatase (APase) gene family of Bacillus subtilis. This was confirmed by immunoassay and N-terminal sequencing of the first 20 amino acids of both proteins. It was further discovered that APaseD is a member of the Pho regulon, as evidenced by the fact that it is phosphate-starvation-induced and dependent on PhoP and PhoR for expression.

Comparison of PhoP binding to the tuaA promoter with PhoP binding to other Pho-regulon promoters establishes a Bacillus subtilis core binding site
Article Abstract:
The regulatory proteins PhoP, a response regulator, and PhoR, a histidine kinase, modulates the response of Bacillus subtilis to phosphate limitation. The regulation of the phosphate response gene by these two proteins are believed to be at the transcription level. Another Pho-regulon promoter, tuaA is also modulated by phosphorylated PhoP which interacts avidly with a core binding region containing TT(A/T)ACA motifs.
