Improved fluorescent in situ hybridization method for detection of bacteria from activated sludge and river water by using DNA molecular beacons and flow cytometry
Article Abstract:
A study was conducted to show that the DNA molecular beacons (MBs) could be used for fluorescent in situ hybridization (FISH) in laboratory and environmental samples to obtain better discriminatory power than that of standard monolabeled fluorescent linear probes. The use of DNA beacons together with single-laser flow cytometry presents a method that does not have the associated expense of peptide nucleic acid (PNA) beacons or dual-laser flow cytometry.

Antimicrobial use and resistance in swine waste treatment systems
Article Abstract:
The effects of common conventional swine production practices on the level of antimicrobial resistance genes in swine waste handling treatment systems is evaluated by measuring culture-based and molecular resistance to provide a detailed picture of resistance levels. Results revealed that all of the feed samples tested, including those from the organic farm, contained tetracycline resistance genes.
