Inactivation of fecal bacteria in drinking water by solar heating
Article Abstract:
Solar heat above 55 degrees celsius disinfects water that is heavily contaminated with fecal bacteria. Exposure to the Kenyan sunshine with a temperature above 55 degrees celsius completely disinfects water samples, containing a wild-type strain of Escherichia coli, in seven hours. There is an absence of viable organisms and fresh growth even after twelve hours. Exposure to such temperatures purifies water having high turbidity with no penetration of ultra violet radiation. The synergistic effects between the optical and thermal processes are still unclear.

Simultaneous chromium reduction and phenol degradation in a coculture of Escherichia coli ATCC 33456 and Pseudomonas putida DMP-1
Article Abstract:
In a coculture of Escherichia coli ATCC 33456 and Pseudomonas putida DMP-1, concurrent Cr(VI) reduction and phenol degradation occur by E. coli and P. putida, respectively. To optimize the reduction of Cr(VI) to Cr(III) and degradation of phenol, a proper population composition of the coculture is essential. At a low population ratio of E. coli and P. putida, the rate of Cr(VI) reduction is controlled by the rate of phenol degradation.

Novel cassette-based shuttle vector system for gram-positive bacteria
Article Abstract:
A series of novel versatile Escherichia coli-staphylococcal shuttle vectors based on PCR-generated interchangeable cassettes was developed and evaluated. The modular design of the vector system provides great flexibility and variety and this system constitutes an effective tool for studying gene regulation of staphylococci in various ecosystems.
