Incubation and fledging durations of woodpeckers
Article Abstract:
Allometric relationships of fledging durations to incubation, body mass and egg mass were studied in 39 species of woodpeckers and wrynecks (Picidae) and compared to those in altricial birds. Results revealed shorter incubation and longer fledging periods for Picidae in the comparable range of body and egg masses in altricial species. However, a similarity was observed in between their total development duration and that of altricial birds. It was proposed that the short incubation period found in Picidae reflects an adaptation to poor gas exchange around eggs when they are under the incubating parent.

Indeterminacy in a determinate layer: the spur-winged plover
Article Abstract:
The Spur-winged Plover is a determinate layer with respect to egg addition and removal of the second, third or fourth egg in a clutch. However, some females of this species respond to the removal of the first egg in a clutch as indeterminate layers and move to a new nest. Thus, the response to clutch manipulation is a more useful measure than discrete categorization of birds as determinate or indeterminate.
