Induction of Methyl Butyl Ether (MTBE)-oxidizing activity in mycobacterium vaccae JOBS by MTBE
Article Abstract:
Methyl tertiary butyl ether (MTBE) is an oxygenating compound added to gasoline to reduce harmful emissions and studies were conducted to examine the effects of MTBE on MTBE-oxidizing activity of mycobacterium vaccae JOB5, which are alkane-grown cells of M.vaccae. It was found that the presence of MTBE promoted MTBE-oxidation and induction of MTBE-oxidizing activity by MTBE is subject to catabolic repression.

Oxidation of methyl tert-butyl ether by alkane hydroxylase in dicyclopropylketone-induced and n-octane-grown GPo1
Article Abstract:
The potential for methyl tert-butyl ether (MTBE) oxidation by Pseudomonas putida GPo1 with cells grown in the presence of dicyclopropylketone (DCPK) was reexamined. The results reveal that MTBE oxidation by this organism may have previously gone unnoticed because of the unusually high K(sub s) value exhibited by alkane for MTBE.

Cometabolism of methyl tertiary butyl ether and gaseous n-alkanes by pseudomonas mendocina KR-1 grown on C5 to C8 n-alkanes
Article Abstract:
The potential for cometabolic degradation of methyl tertiary butyl ether (MTBE) is investigated by Pseudomonas mendocina KR-1. The results conclude that MTBE oxidation by alkane-grown cells of P. mendocina KR-1 is a cometabolic process that involves the activity of an inducible n-alkane oxidizing monooxygenase enzyme system.
