Infection paradox: High abundance but low impact of freshwater benthic viruses
Article Abstract:
A shallow wetland system was considered with contrasting microhabitats in close proximity for demonstrating that in marked contrast to pelagic systems, viral infections, determined directly by transmission electron microscopy and consequently mortality of prokaryotes were surprisingly low in benthic habitats in all seasons. This was the case even though free viruses were abundant throughout the year and infection through bacteria and mortality rates were high in surrounding water.

Physiological adaptations involved in alkane assimilation at a low temperature by Rhodococcus sp. strain Q15
Article Abstract:
Physiological adaptations involved in alkane assimilation at a low temperature by Rhodococcus sp. strain Q15 have been studied due to the capability of Q15 to produce biosurfactants and to alter its cell membrane by changing the fatty acid composition in response to growth temperature and carbon source. Strain Q15 is a psychrotroph that has the capability of mineralizing a variety of alkanes and have been found to be grow on and emulsify diesel fuel and Bunker C crude oil.

Benthic bacterial and fungal productivity and carbon turnover in a freshwater marsh
Article Abstract:
A study was conducted on the significance of annual microbial production in a structurally complex system, by measuring production rates of bacteria and fungi over an annual cycle in four aerobic habitats of a littoral freshwater marsh. It was observed that aerobic microbial carbon transformations took place mostly on the littoral freshwater marshes.
