Inhibition of Streptococcus mutans NS adhesion to glass with and without a salivary conditioning film by biosurfactant-releasing Streptococcus mitis strains
Article Abstract:
Results show that microorganisms adhering to oral cavity release biosurfactants to prevent colonization by other strains. Data reveal that two Streptococcus mitis protect the oral cavity from colonizing saliva-coated surfaces by cariogenic Streptococcus mutans bacteria.

Physicochemical and structural investigation of the surfaces of some anaerobic subgingival bacteria
Article Abstract:
The physicochemical and morphological surface characteristics of ten subgingival bacterial isolates were studied using a variety of methods. Resultsreveal that all contain an RR-staining layer with 7 isolates displaying fibrillar appendages. Both structures significantly contribute to bacterial surface charge and hydrophobicity. The three strains lacking appendages are assumed to have enough surface proteins capable of counteracting the negative charge conferred by the RR-staining layer.

Comparison of velocity profiles for different flow chamber designs used in studies of microbial adhesion to surfaces
Article Abstract:
Research discusses the design and construction of the parallel plate flow chambers used as flow chambers in microbial adhesion studies. The flow chambers are examined with respect to their hydrodynamic conditions and flow rates for generating optimum velocity profiles. Data suggest that the inlets and outlets of the chambers have to be in line with the flow channel.
