Isolation and molecular identification of planctomycete bacteria from postlarvae of the giant tiger prawn, Penaeus monodon
Article Abstract:
The postlarvae of the giant tiger prawn (Penaeus monodon) contain unpigmented planctomycetes whose 16S rRNA signature sequence is similar to that of the Pirellula planctomycetes group. The bacteria are present in both infected and uninfected postlarvae. Some pink and orange pigmented bacteria are also present. The pink bacteria are probably members of a new Pirellula species while the orange bacteria are similar to P. brasiliensis. The Pirellula bacteria are probably present as commensals in the prawn hepatopancreas or hemolymph.

Heterotriphic bacteria in an air handling system
Article Abstract:
An enumeration of heterotrophic bacteria with no reported building-related illness from structural surfaces, drain pan water and the airstream of a well-maintained air-handling system (AHS) is discussed. Samples were taken from the AHS and were subjected to heterotrophic plate count and its representative morphology types were isolated and identified. Significant reservoirs of bacteria acting as biofilm on the cooling coils were found to be harbored by the AHS.

Microbial diversity in a hydrocarbon- and chlorinated-solvent-contaminated aquifer undergoing intrinsic bioremediation
Article Abstract:
A study was conducted to analyze constituents of microbial communities related to an aquifer contaminated with hydrocarbons and chlorinated solvents. A culture-independent molecular technique was utilized to carry out the analysis. In addition, the premise that the terminal step of hydrocarbon degradation in the methanogenic area of the aquifer is aceticlastic methanogenesis was examined.
