Linkage analysis of potyvirus resistance alleles in cucumber
Article Abstract:
The resistance genes against three strains of potyvirus in cucumber, Cucumis sativus, were assigned in the known linkage groups in this species using identical second filial generation, backcrosses and linkage analysis. Results revealed that the alleles for the resistance against zucchini yellow mosaic virus and against the watermelon strain of the papaya ringspot virus are linked to the allele for bitter cotyledon and the allele for the cotyledon-expressed resistance against the watermelon mosaic virus is linked to the gynoecious sex expression locus.

Heart leaf, a recessive leaf shape marker in cucumber: linkage with disease resistance and other traits
Article Abstract:
A study was conducted on the inheritance of a new leaf shape character in Cucumis sativus L. and its relationship to ten disease resistance and horticultural traits. Results show that the heart leaf shape is designated by a recessive gene and loosely linked to the locus for spine frequency, spine size and warty fruits. There was weak linkage for the pm locus for powdery mildew resistance and dull fruit and warty fruit loci. The disease resistance and horticultural loci were further arranged into four linkage groups.

Predominant paternal transmission of the mitochondrial genome in cucumber
Article Abstract:
Paternal transmission of mtDNA was observed in cucumber. Segregation analyses of fragment length polymorphisms showed that Pst\ genomic clone was inherited in cucumber. Absence of polymorphisms in cpDNA was speculated as a result of low genetic background. Two hybrid plants were found to possess parental fragments for one of the two polymorphic probe enzyme which was likely due to mitochondrial heterogeneity.
