Low genetic variation among killer whales (Orcinus orca) in the Eastern North Pacific and genetic differentiation between foraging specialists
Article Abstract:
Genetic variations at three nuclear DNA markers in killer whales from coastal waters off California through Alaska were compared and sequenced for 520 bp from the mitochondrial region. The putative sympatric populations were distinguished by social and foraging behaviour and were termed residents and transients. Low levels of variation within populations were found, compared to other cetaceans. Fixed mtDNA haplotype differences were also found, and these findings indicated low levels of genetic dispersal.

Mitochondrial DNA sequence variation and phylogeographical structure of rock partridge (Alectoris graeca) populations
Article Abstract:
Mitochondrial DNA sequences from rock partridge populations in the Alps, Apennines and Balkans suggest a phylogeographical structuring. Sicilian partridges could have been isolated for as much as 500,000 years, but populations from Albania and the Apennines could have been in contact as recently as the last glacial epoch maximum, approximately 21,000 years ago. The Alps could have been populated with partridges in either two different times or through two source populations.
