Maternal effect as a cause of exceptions for Haldane's rule
Article Abstract:
One of the few general rules in evolutionary biology is Haldane's rule, which states that the heterozygous sex is the absent, rare or sterile sex in species hybrids. However, previous studies have shown that the rule does not always hold. This is particularly true in Drosophila interspecific crosses. It has been hypothesized that exceptions to Haldane's rule are the result of postzygotic isolation involving partially recessive alleles. However, maternal effects provide a more plausible explanation for the phenomenon.

The maternal hybrid rescue (mhr) gene of Drosophila simulans
Article Abstract:
A gene located at chromosome 2 of Drosophila simulans act as a maternal hybrid rescue (mhr) gene in female hybrids of D. simulans females and D. melanogaster males. This brings the number of rescue genes to three, the other two being the lethal hybrid rescue of D. simulans and the hybrid male rescue (hmr) of D. melanogaster. Although hybridization between the two species results in either lethality or sterility, the presence of both mhr and hmr produces viable male hybrids.

The zygotic hybrid rescue (Zhr) gene of D. melanogaster
Article Abstract:
A mutation in the region near the centromere of the X chromosome of Drosophila melanogaster rescues female hybrids of the D. simulansfemale and D. melanogaster male cross from embryonic lethality. The mutation iscalled zygotic hybrid rescue (Zhr). The mutation also rescues female hybrids ofthe D. mauritania female and D. melanogaster male as well as D. sechellia female and D. melanogaster male crosses. A model explaning the mechanisms of hybrid lethality is presented.
