Migration matrices and surnames in populations with different isolation patterns: Val di Lima (Italian Apennines), Val di Sole (Italian Alps), and La Cabrera (Spain)
Article Abstract:
The migration matrix model of Malecot (1950) is standardized and implemented in large historical-demographical databases of populations with different degrees of isolation, namely, Val di Lima (Italian Apennines), Val di Sole (Italian Alps), and La Cabrera (Spain), to study the population structures of different historical communities. Data from marital migration combined with surname analysis enables a broader examination, since surnames give information about population pattern, such as genetic drift.

Body size, composition, and blood pressure of high-altitude Quechua from the Peruvian central Andes (Huancavelica, 3,680 m)
Article Abstract:
This article examines the effects of high altitude on body composition by investigating anthropometric and body composition variables of adult males in the Peruvian Andes. The Quechua subjects are shorter in relation to body weight and have lower presence of adiposity than do other ethnicities in the region, due to stresses of the high altitude environment.

An analysis of the spatial distribution of surnames in the Lecco area (Lombardy, Italy)
Article Abstract:
An analysis of surnames in three areas of Lecco, Italy shows that migrations have occurred from other areas. This has probably occurred for economic reasons. Analysis of surnames can be used as a proxy for the distribution of some genes, since surnames are passed through the male line.
