Modification of the Fe protein of nitrogenase in natural populations of Trichodesmium thiebautii
Article Abstract:
The modification of iron protein by natural populations of Trichodesmium thiebautii was studied. Expriments involving acetylene reduction, light incubation, blot analysis, RNA extraction and detection were conducted to characterize the involvement of this modification to the diel cycle of nitrogenase and oxygen evolution. It was found that the nitrogen fixation activity of the cyanobacterium is regulated at the level of modification by transcriptional-translational control.

Temporal variability in nitrogenase gene expression in natural populations of the marine cyanobacterium Trichodesmium thiebautii
Article Abstract:
A study was conducted on the temporal relation between transcripts sourced from the nif structural gene operon and the diel variability in nitrogen fixation in natural populations of Trichodesmium species. Observations were made in three weeks within Aug.-Sep. 1991 at oligotrophic stations near the Bahama Islands. Results showed that Trichodesmium nitrogenase expression is also regulated at the transcriptional and/or posttranscriptional level.

Determination of nitrogen-fixing phylotypes in Lyngbya sp. and Microcoleus chthonoplastes cyanobacterial mats from Guerrero Negro, Baja California, Mexico
Article Abstract:
The various microorganisms involved in the nitrogen fixing in Lyngbya sp. and Microcoleus chthonoplastes cyanobacterial microbial mats, from Guerrero Negro, Baja California, Mexico, which have different rates of nitrogenase activity are determined. During the dark period, the nitrogenase gene was expressed in the unicellular and filamentous cyanobacteria and heterotrophic bacteria.
